Summary:

Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine is one of those ‘jack of all trades’ places that offer practically every amenity you can imagine inside a single premises. You’d assume that the water park is their main attraction, but the place has much more to offer in terms of relaxation and recreation. At least the hundreds of people who have left a review on Google agree that there are enjoyment opportunities for guests of practically every age group.

Personal opinion as a travel expert

How many times have you planned a beachside vacation and canceled the plan at the last minute because of extreme weather, high tides, or safety concerns near the coast? As fun as it sounds, going to the beach isn’t always feasible, especially for families with kids.

I find resorts with indoor water parks an excellent alternative. Knowing that the little ones are safe inside the premises, having the time of their lives without getting sunburned, gives me a sense of relaxation that I’ll never find running after them with sunscreen and beach towels on the beach.

But even then, I knew I had to research and learn from other people’s experiences to reduce any chances of ending up at a trashy hotel.

After staying at the Great Wolf Lodge at Grapevine, I have decided to share my analysis as a guide for all those afraid of wasting precious time and money and ending up disappointed.

And if, towards the end of this guide, you feel like the Great Wolf Lodge is not the right place to spend your dream holiday, you can check out some excellent alternatives I have incorporated as a bonus.

Who is the Great Wolf Lodge, Grapevine for?

The lodging is ideal for families with kids aged between 7 to 13. Most of their activities, including the slides and attractions in their indoor water park, rope climbing and rock collecting activities, and arcade rides, are aimed towards this particular age group.

Additionally, the resort accommodates aged guests by offering wheelchair access, reduced mobility rooms, and special facilities for disabled guests.

Who is the Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine NOT for?

I wouldn’t recommend Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine as a potential honeymoon destinor to couples in general. Though some amenities are claimed to be adults-only, like the hot tub area, those too are usually invaded by the kids.

Additionally, the quest stations for MagiQuest are located near the rooms. So, unless your idea of fun is hearing kids run up and down the hallway, Great Wolf Lodge wouldn’t qualify as an adults-only resort.

Is it worth it if I travel with kids aged between 2 and 5?

Yes! The hotel has something for everyone, even preschoolers. Kids aged 2 to 5 can enjoy the splash area in the water park, and the Build-a-Bear activity will keep them occupied for quite some time.

Some thrill rides and water slides have a minimum 42-inch height restriction, but the rest are good to go. You can also get a Day Pass if you’re not planning a stay, and in that case, kids under two years old will have free access to the water park.

What amenities are included in the resort fee?

Though Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine is not an all-inclusive system, the resort fee includes several amenities, including:

  • Fun lobby activities, like glow parties and arts and crafts
  • Complimentary wolf ears in the gift shop
  • Water park access
  • Life jackets and towels in the water park
  • Virtual concierge service
  • Free Wi-Fi

What does the package not include?

  • Parking
  • Fitness center
  • Spa
  • Airport shuttle

We had a kidskamp room on the 4th floor. When we checked in at our check in time, we had to wait an additional 1hr because our room wasn't ready yet.Once in our room, we had no shower gel, no coffee (only decaf) and the floor by the table was sticky. So we got sticky stuff on our feet.Multiple rooms have a fire alarm right above the bed that has a flickering light that is very bright at night. The water park is really the only fun part for our child. We ate at one of their restaurants and waited 1hr for our food. Once we got our two burgers, they and the fries were cold.

We’re currently here and there’s no water in the hotel. Are you kidding me? We can’t flush, shower, etc. The fire alarm by the bed flashes all night like a bright flashlight and every single vending machine is empty on every floor.

Rooms:Pros:Texting the concierge for questions things is really great. You can text to check out, without having to go to the deskComments:Not the hotel's fault, but the magiquest game is on every floor, and there are tons of kids sprinting around unsupervised, so be aware of that. If you have small kids, they will get knocked down likely. We rounded corners to sprinting kids about every time we went anywhere. I'd suggest having an adult up front when waking, if you have small kids.Food prices are out of control, so door dash, head down the street for food, or go to Walgreens for stuff for the fridge, and snacks.Cons:If the water park wasn't attached, I'd say this place is about like a motel 6 or less.No prices in half the gift shopCarpet was worn, stained, and torn all over8 out of 12 plugs or outlets didn't workNearly all the usb charging ports were outDoor had to be forced closed, and was accidentally left open several times, due to not pushing it shut with enough force.Tub faucet was falling offHalf the elevator buttons didn't work. There is a smoke detector in the bunk bed area of the kid's cabin room that strobes all night long. I'd like a white flashing light. They provide 2 small bar soaps, and that's it, so buy and bring your own.Water Park and events:Water park was fantastic, and warm in October. Rides were a blast, especially the sides.Staff activities like dances for the kids were great too. My kid loved it.Magiquest:Lots of the magiquest stations were broken, and didn't work. Even the big finally wouldn't work right for the red dragon quest line. My kid was upset because we never could finish it, due to the screen not taking touch input. We went through the line several times to do it, and we saw maybe 1 out of 10 families manage to do it, despite some having done it before (on other occasions). We had our wand stop working twice in 2 hours, and had to go back to the shop for a new one both times. They were out of most of the wands and several of the tips you select from.We had to go back to the shop to have him mark us as done with a broken quest that we waited a while trying to figure out the issue.

Before showing up i was reading reviews and expecting it to be horrible. It turned out to be so much fun for my family and I. I think the people leaving bad reviews about the service and rooms are used to high end "resorts", I've only been to a couple in my life and this was a fun one. Definitely geared towards younger kids, teens might not have too much to do but arcade and pool area. It was a bit pricey but so much fun, and there was always something to do! My daughter could barley keep up with the agenda they had offered. Definitely enjoyed watching her have so much fun. Only complaint I have is the elevators did always take a while to come and we were on the 7th floor. But it's such a huge place I can understand why! Would recommend if you have kiddos!

Overall, the stay was exceptional. There are so many things to do to keep a family busy. However, you nickel & dime everything to death. It was wildly expensive to do these other activities. Some other concerns:1) The floor in the swimming areas are textured to prevent slipping. GREAT! Why then, do the floors to the restrooms change over to SLICK TILE? Why not keep the textured tile in these common areas? I just don't understand this as both a Paramedic & an Emergency Manager who looks for things like this.2) Everyone knows water and metal don't mix very well. While standing in line to one of the slides (The Tornado & Canyon rides), we noticed that a support beam had completely rusted away from the other support beam. Perhaps you should take a closer look at the entire support structure there.3) Only 6 SMALL elevators for the entire 8 floor building? There was always a wait in the respective lobbies.4) The fire alarm: During the entire time that the alarms were going off, not ONE of the lifeguards tried to clear the pools, even though it was found to be a false alarm.

This is very overpriced for the experience. We came once during the height of the pandemic and had the best time. There weren’t as many crowds and service was excellent. Our visit this week was the opposite. It was overcrowded (stood in line for almost 2 hours simply to check in), the water park was so full that you couldn’t even move around without bumping people. The wave pool got pooped in and shut down three times in one afternoon. The lines were long.Hot water was lacking both days we showered. It would come and go but mostly it was lukewarm. The towel rentals were out of towels by the water park so we had to drip-dry before we could leave. But my biggest pet peeve was the “preferred parking” that we paid for. We left the resort and came back to find all the spots full and was told by staff that they couldn’t refund our money we paid, and we would have to talk to valet separately to see how we could get our money back. All in all, I felt “nickel and dimed” for everything and was disappointed. I wish they wouldn’t overbook the place because we paid a lot of money for a very cheap experience due to crowds. Probably won’t go back again, sadly.

We had the best experience with my 3 year old nephew. Loved the option of being able to enjoy the outside water activities as well.Although expensive, the choice of food and drinks was awesome. We absolutely loved the breakfast buffet. The omelets were great! Can't believe how fun the bigger slides were! The tornado had me screaming! The room ac works great, and the beds and pillows were very comfy, which made it a great place to sleep. Can't wait to go back for more fun.Now the cons. The hotel interior could definitely use an upgrade. The duct tape on the uneven floor on floor 8's hallway is a trip hazard, and my nephew fell over it a couple of times. The hot tub that's inside needs a little help, as not very many of the jets work.

Hotel facilities

Water Park and Water Activities

Great Wolf Lodge boasts an 80,000-square-foot indoor water park, ideally kept at an 84-degree temperature year-round. Accessible from 9am to 8pm daily, the water slides are the hotel’s crown jewel.

Here is a breakdown so you can know what you’re up for:

  • Fort MacKenzie: A 4-storey treehouse featuring dump buckets and small slides
  • Crooked Creek: A low-thrill lazy river for the kids
  • Alberta Falls: A 4-storey tandem ride for the taller-than-42-inch crowd
  • North and South Hot Springs: Rejuvenating hot tub areas segregated by age group; North is for adults, while South is accessible to all
  • Whooping Willow, Raccoon Lagoon, and Cub Paw Pool: With shallow water, shirt slides, and multiple climbing structures, these rides are heaven for kids
  • Howlin’ Tornado: A thrilling six-storey water slide – it’s not for the faint-hearted!
  • Slap Tail Pond: 5-foot deep wave pool for all ages to enjoy

Restaurant

With eight on-site restaurants, you won’t run out of dining options during your stay. The experience ranges from buffets and casual dining to poolside snack bars and grab-and-go cafes.

Here is a run-down of the restaurants at Great Wolf Lodge and what they offer:

  • Buckets: This water park snack bar serves delicious burgers, sandwiches, and salads for lunch and dinner
  • Loose Moose: The resort’s breakfast and dinner buffet features an assortment of cuisines
  • The Watering Hole: A poolside bar reserved for beverages
  • Bear Paw: A desert heaven with a menu loaded with baked treats, ice cream, and fudge
  • Grizzly Jack’s Bar and Grill: This outdoor pool bar serves tacos, burgers, drunks, and more
  • Hungry as a Wolf: Open for lunch and dinner, their pizzas and salads hit the spot every time
  • Lodge Wood Fired Grill: A fancy dining experience featuring steaks and seafood
  • Starbucks: The ultimate refuelling station for your body

Family rooms

The Standard Suites are the most affordable and accommodate 4 to 6 people. These rooms have balconies and bathtubs.

The Premium Suites accommodate up to 8 persons and have wheelchair-accessible bathrooms and balconies.

Personally, I would vouch for their Themed Suites – the experience makes every penny worth it! These rooms facilitate 6 to 7 people and are equipped with private whirlpools and log, cave, or tent-themed sleeping areas.

Activities

If you get bored of the water activities, although the chances are slim, you can explore the other fun activities the resort offers. Some of my favourites included:

  • MagiQuest: A live-action game involving wands and an enchanting adventure
  • Northern Lights Arcade: Fun games with prizes for all ages
  • Howlers Peak Ropes Course: Burn those extra calories by climbing rocks and crossing bridges
  • Oliver’s Mining Co: Collect rocks and gems as souvenirs

Though all these activities are available a la carte, I suggest you get a pass to avail the fun at a discounted price. There are three levels of passes:

  • Pup Pass: Includes Build-a-Bear, Candy Cup, ice cream, and a $5 arcade card
  • Paw Pass: MagiQuest game, leather bracelet, Candy Cup, ice cream, $5 game card, and swim goggles
  • Wolf Pass: Build-a-Bear, MagiQuest, leather bracelet, Candy Cup, ice cream, $5 game card, rope course pass, gemstone mining

Insider Tip: You can split activities between multiple people, so if your kids don’t like an activity, you can enjoy it instead.

Location

The hotel is conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth in Texas. A 30-minute drive will get you to Downtown Dallas, where you can access a world of shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Dallas FortWorth International Airport is a 10-minute drive from the resort.

Best alternatives to the Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine

Great Wolf Lodge is excellent in many respects, but the place doesn’t have that many adults-only recreational options. Some might even argue that the activities may be too overwhelming for kids.

So, as promised, here is a run-down of the top 3 alternatives to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine:

Alternative 1: Gaylord Texan Resort and Spa

Featuring a huge outdoor pool area, lazy river, walk-in beach, and poolside bar, Gaylord Texan Resort and Spa is everything you wish for and more. Their copper and tan rustic-themed rooms are equipped with hot tubs.

You will have ample entertainment at the Glass Cactus Nightclub and six restaurants. And when you’re done, you can head towards their top-notch European-style spa for a rejuvenating massage.

Alternative 2: Courtyard by Marriott

Located within a 10-minute drive from Grapevine Mills Mall, Courtyard by Marriott is an excellent hotel for families who want a balanced holiday, with ample opportunities for entertainment and relaxation

The hotel offers airport shuttle service and access to an outdoor pool, fitness centre, and bar. However, the dining options here are limited to one on-site restaurant, which only has American cuisine on its menu.

Alternative 3: Hampton Inn and Suites

If you’re planning to bring pets along on your holiday, Holiday Inn and Suites is the best option.

Mornings at Hampton Inn and Suites start with a hearty continental breakfast. You can access the indoor pool afterwards or head towards their fitness centre. The fireplace in the lobby creates a cosy ambience, nice enough to spend a relaxing evening.

Although there is no parking available, you can get a shuttle to and from the airport.
